Executive Recruitment Case Study - City of Glasgow College

Brief

City of Glasgow College is the largest and most successful further education college in Scotland, having delivered the nation’s first Super College, valued at £228 million in total.

Part of the Executive Leadership Team, the newly created Vice Principal would lead on high quality teaching and learning, an innovative curriculum and an excellent student experience within a world class environment.

The selection panel sought to appoint an inspirational leader of the highest calibre with a successful track record within the further education sector.

Process

AoC Create worked with Principal and selection panel to gain a clear understanding of their ambitions for the college and the new post holder.  We constructed a detailed profile to ensure the executive search targeted the most effective candidates. We created impactful advertising messages and candidate information, and launched a bespoke microsite.

We undertook a targeted search campaign, in which we identified and approached the strongest individuals with a track record of achievement in teaching and learning. The executive search was complemented by a number of other attraction methods to raise awareness, including online advertising, e-shots and social networking.  All interested individuals were directed to the bespoke microsite and nurtured by us throughout the process, to ensure that interest and momentum remained high.

We received applications from 21 candidates, of whom 11 already had experience within second tier / senior post holder roles.  AoC Create screened all applications in line with the selection panel’s criteria and conducted rigorous checks in order to produce a thorough report on each candidate.

The selection panel short listed six candidates for final selection. AoC Create made arrangements for the final selection process and an AoC Create recruitment manager joined the selection panel to assist in assessing candidates. We ensured that candidates were thoroughly supported before and during the assessment days and provided impactful guidance to the selection panel throughout the assessment process.

Outcome

The selection panel was delighted to appoint a candidate who brought a range of key skills and personal attributes to develop the college’s curriculum offer and student experience to its fullest potential.
