This training event is for senior managers preparing to take on the role of a nominee at Ofsted’s full or short inspections. It will be based on the current Common Inspection Framework 2015 and handbook for FE and Skills, updated February 2018. (The next framework is likely to be introduced for inspections from September 2019.)

The workshop will cover:

  • The structure of FE and skills inspections against the CIF 2015
  • How your college/organisation will be inspected – the different types of provision
  • The role of the nominee
  • (Just) before the inspection – From notification to inspectors’ arrival – responding to the PIAF (pre-inspection analysis form; arranging meetings; allocating roles)
  • During inspection – being a member of two teams at once (inspection team and SMT)
  • Judging students’ personal development, progress, achievement and outcomes
  • How teaching, learning and assessment are inspected
  • Other key topics raised by delegates, e.g. the inspection of Prevent and safeguarding
  • What makes an effective nominee*
  • (Long) before the inspection – preparing for inspection – What do you need to put in place now.

The objectives of the workshop are to:

  • understand how a) full** and b) short inspections** are carried out against the CIF 2015 (The main focus will be full inspections)
  • understand how self-assessment is incorporated into the inspection process
  • understand the full expectations of the role ad what it involves
  • explore how well you need to know your college and a member of the inspection team – and how to set up your back-up team
  • explore the evidence required by inspectors, including data, key documents, schedules, learners’ voice, meetings with governors, SMT and partners
  • gain a very clear understanding of the way: teaching, learning and assessment; personal development, behaviour and welfare; outcomes for learners are inspected
  • have some top tips on how to prepare for inspection and be an effective nominee.
